Campine rocks biodiversity

On the 3th of January, the Interreg project 2B Connect came officially to an end. 26 partners from the Netherlands and Flanders have been working hard for four years to achieve more biodiversity on their company sites.

We are glad to announce that their hard work paid off: they put up 10 model projects, one of them was a project set up by Campine.

In total, 135 hectares of land was turned ‘greener’. 77 species benefit from this projects. For Campine, that species is, amongst others, the bat.

In 2018, Campine built a bat hotel, in cooperation with VITO, a technical school located in Hoogstraten. This bat hotel looks like a concrete shelter and is located next to Campine, near the canal. This location is ideal for the bat, since they usually fly slightly above the water. Here are almost no obstacles, so they can use the space above the canal as ‘a highway’ at night.

Besides the bat, there are many other species to be found around Campine. Campine has 25 hectares of natural domain around their company site, where you can find the galloway cow, the very rare crested newt and the pitch frog. For the amphibians, Campine has made many efforts during the last few months: we created different pools for the frogs and the newts, which will guarantee their conservation. These pools have both shallow and deeper parts, what makes it convenient for both species to survive during all stages of their development.

Using the sand out of the excavated pools, Campine built a natural ‘wall’ in the northeast of the company site, functioning as a filter for noise, light and dust for the environment.

At Campine, we are very proud of the realizations in the 2B Connect project, and we are happy to help nature and biodiversity whenever we can.
